About the January one month meditation practice:
Dear M Bergeron,
This January I made my annual one month of meditation practice. It is a proprietary mix that I use.
One of the takeaways of this January practice was me giving up some darling projects to focus on the one(s) that matter(s).
The other thing I realized was how much I feel sucked into the spirit of our times. I read all the new non-fiction in fashion, the studies and articles, the twitter posts and LinkedIn comments.
So?
Well... Mister Bergeron, I decided to change something about the way I see today. See less of today and more of sometime else. Change my lens for a while. I took away all the books from my reading table that were "of today" and proudly said "now what?"
The - almost random but not quite - date of 1850 became the standard. It's Pre-industrial revolution. There is still Balzac and Victor Hugo, (which I'll still be glad to skip), but it opens up the world of Chaucer, Voltaire and Cervantes.
But perhaps most intriguingly, it opens up the magical world of Japanese medieval works, of Middle Eastern very very long epics, of Greek and Sanskrit and Chinese.
Wish me luck, for this year I have taken a pledge.
I will miss Vonnegut most.
Love,
Jo
Give Flaubert’s “Sentimental Education” a whirl. It’s set in 1848. I loved it.
